Proteobacteria:

  • Major type of gram negative bacteria.
  • This class includes a variety of pathogenic genra like Esherichia, Salmonella, Vibrio etc.
  • It also includes non parasitic bacteria also.
  • Also include some nitrogen fixers.

2. Domain:

  • Proteobacteria is under domain bacteria.

3. Characteristics:

  • They have an outer membrane composed of lipopolysaccharides.
  • They mostly use flagella for movement.
  • Some of them lack flagella and are non motile. Such bacteria rely in bacterial gliding.
  • Alpha type of Proteobacteria can grow in very low Concentration of nutrients.
  • Alpha type of Proteobacteria also possesses unusual structures such as stalk and buds.
  • Mitochondria are considered to be the descendent of  .
